On June 12, the 70th Annual Tony Awards were held at the Beacon Theatre in N.Y.C. Some of Broadway’s most famous performers attended the ceremony in their favorite formal attire. While some opted for a classic black tux or an elegant plain dress, others strayed from these fashion norms and revealed new formal trends.
Instead of black, many of the males wore navy tuxedos and suits. For example, choreographer and dancer Andy Blankenbuehler wore a navy tux with black satin lapels. In addition, actor Mark Strong, who was nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Play, wore an Alexander McQueen tuxedo that mimicked Blankerbuehler’s look. Just a few of the stars who sported this style included Christopher Jackson, Josh Groban, Aaron Tveit, Brandon Victor Dixon, Thomas Kail, Andrew Rannells and David Rockwell- the list goes on! It looks like navy was the new black at the Tony Awards.
In addition to this trend, several men wore black tuxedos with textured jackets and other embellishments. For example, actor and presenter Erich Bergen wore a black tux with a subtle paisley design on the jacket and satin piping on his pants. These details made his red carpet outfit much more interesting because it was built off of a classic look. In addition, costume designer Emilio Sosa wore a similar outfit. He sported a black patterned jacket with black, satin pants.
While a few females stuck with plain satin dresses, many decided to go all out with patterns. Singer and actress Renée Elise Goldsberry, who won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, wore a wild purple and black dress by Marc Jacobs. The design of the stripes was bold to say the least! In addition, writer, actress and singer Tavi Gevinson wore a plaid blouse and patterned skirt by Coach. Although both pieces included similar red hues, the contrast of the two patterns definitely brought attention to her look. Furthermore, actress and filmmaker Lupita Nyong’o wore a navy, light blue, yellow, red, pink and white, sequin, off-the-shoulder dress. All of the colors and textures in the ensemble gave Nyong’o a statement look as always.
The Tony Awards brought a red carpet full of navy tuxes, a surplus of satin embellishments, and an abundance of patterns and textures. We can’t wait to see what new trends next year’s award ceremony will bring to the red carpet!
